Here’s a quick breakdown of how long it’ll take to defrost your turkey or ham according to the USDA.
In the fridge, allow at least 24 hours for every four to five pounds with your fridge temperature set to 40 degrees or below.
If you’re short on time, try thawing in cold water by allowing for about 30 minutes per pound and changing the water every 30 minutes.
If you’re in a pinch, use the defrost function on your microwave and allow for six minutes per pound and make sure to rotate often.
Never leave a turkey or ham out to thaw. The USDA does not recommend leaving a frozen turkey or ham out at room temperature to thaw, whether on the countertop or in a sink. The outside will thaw long before the center does, making it a ripe scenario for bacteria.
