Generators are a great option to provide backup power during outages or blackouts. However, generators produce carbon monoxide, which makes following the safety tips below more important than ever.
- Always keep generators outside and at least 20 feet away from your home, doors and windows.
- Never operate a generator in an enclosed space such as inside your home or garage, even if windows are open.
- Make sure the generator has three to four feet of clear space for ventilation and always direct the exhaust away from your home.
- Install CO detectors near every sleeping area in your home and check them regularly.
- Make sure to stop generators when no electrical loads are connected.
- Keep generators dry and do not operate when wet.
- Only refuel when your generator is cool.
- Do not plug a portable generator directly into your home, connect items being powered directly to the generator.
