Affordability is key

An update from board president, Carol Dvorak

Central prides itself on providing safe, reliable and affordable power to our membership. These three attributes have been a focus of the cooperative since it was formed in 1938. At an average cost of about $3 per day, it is easy to take electricity for granted. That $3 keeps our homes comfortable, our food cold, our clothes washed and dried, and provides power to the many devices that entertain us – all for about the price of a fancy coffee from your favorite coffee shop. It’s no wonder that households are using more electricity.

The Energy Information Agency (EIA.gov) expects the household demand for electricity to grow by 2.3% in 2021. One reason for that growth is the number of internet-connected devices, which is now at 10 or more devices in the average home. With the recent launch of Centranet fiber, it is great to be involved in industries that provide such an increase in quality of life to our membership.

Typically when demand goes up, so too does the price, as is the case with most goods or services, like cable or even your favorite specialty coffee. However, that’s not true with electricity. Let’s take a look at how the value of electricity compares to other common expenses.

Over the last five years, the cost of rent increased 3.4%; medical care increased 2.8%; and education increased 2.2%. But the cost of electricity only increased 1%. Considering all the ways we depend on electricity, it still remains a great value.

The next time you’re enjoying your favorite podcast, TV series or movie, consider how electricity enhances your quality of life.

We care about you, the members we serve, and understand that electricity is more than a commodity – it’s a necessity. That’s why Central will continue working hard to power your life, safely, reliably and affordably.
